Stevenage captain Carl Piergianni has today signed an extended contract with Stevenage according to the club’s official website .
The Englishman was a vital part of Steve Evans’ promotion winning side and after a standout season, Piergianni has been rewarded with “a new, improved & extended contract”.
The centre-back joined the Boro from Oldham Athletic in the summer of 2022, and appeared in every single game in the season, starting on 45 occasions. Piergianni was a key component in the side’s promotion and he was duly rewarded with the club’s Player Of The Year Award.
The accolades did not stop for the 31-year-old, as he was included in the League Two Team of the Season as well as being nominated for both the EFL and League Two Player of the Season awards. The defence would only concede 39 goals all season, which was the third best in the league.
How did Stevenage’s season go?
Boro kept 19 clean sheets, 13 of those coming at the Lamex, in what was an incredibly successful first full season at the club for both Piergianni and manager Steve Evans. Stevenage gained automatic promotion to League One having achieved second place in the league, just six points behind title winners Leyton Orient.
Next season will be Boro’s first season back in the third tier since their bottom of the table finish in the 2013/14 season. Retaining the services of captain Piergianni could be a huge boost for Steve Evans’ side, as they will be looking to hold their own in League One. Having scored seven goals in the 2022/23 season, Piergianni is an aerial threat from set pieces which could be a asset as they look to maintain their stay.
Who is Carl Piergianni?
The 31-year-old began his career with Peterborough United, but would make only one senior start for the Posh. Spells with Stockport County, Corby Town, Boston United and Salford City would all follow, where he would go on to firmly establish himself as a well respected non league centre-half.
Gaining promotion to League Two with Salford unfortunately led to the defender falling out of favour at the club resulting in his departure to fellow League Two side Oldham Athletic in 2020, originally on loan before making the move permanent. Piergianni was club captain at Oldham when they were relegated to the National League. After the expiration of his contract, he joined Steve Evans’ Stevenage. His strength and aerial ability have made him one of the best defenders in the league this season, and at 31, there could be plenty more to come from the defender.
Writer’s View
Having had his best season to date, it was essential that Stevenage extended and improved their captain’s contract in order to thwart any potential buyers. Piergianni displays all the characteristics that will make him a great player in League One. Although it will no doubt be a tougher season for Stevenage, they’ll go into League One with plenty of confidence given the season they had.
