Carlisle United centre-half Morgan Feeney is being monitored by a trio of SPFL clubs according to FootballScotland .
The defender has been with the Cumbrian side since joining from Sunderland in January 2021. The 24-year-old made 34 appearances across all competitions for the Blues, in what was an incredible campaign, seeing Carlisle return to League One via the play-offs for the first time since 2014.
Earlier on in the year, Feeney was named club captain, leading the Cumbrians to their best league finish since joining League 2 in 2014. The captain played an integral part in the campaign however did suffer a season-ending injury against Leyton Orient which would mean he would miss the last seven games of the campaign as well as the entirety of the play-offs.
Who is interested in him?
When he was on the pitch, however, his performances did not go unnoticed, and the defender has attracted significant interest from three Scottish Premier League teams. Hibernian have emerged as a potential destination, with both Aberdeen and Hearts also monitoring the situation.
With Hibernian qualifying for the Europa Conference League, the attraction of European football could draw the 24-year-old in. Furthering this, the defender has also worked under Hibs boss Lee Johnson during his time at Sunderland. With a few key names already departing Easter Road, Johnson will be looking for replacements across the pitch this summer.
Feeney is currently out of contract at Carlisle, but the club have offered their club captain a new deal. No agreements have been confirmed as of yet.
Who is Morgan Feeney?
Having come through the Everton academy, Feeney was capped by England up until the under-20s. During his time at Goodison Park, Feeney would make just two senior appearances for the Toffees, the defender then joined Sunderland where he would play just once. A move to Carlisle in the 2021 January transfer window kickstarted Feeney’s career where he’s proved himself as one of the strongest centre-halves in League Two. Being club captain at just 24 years of age shows how highly he is regarded at Brunton Park and he is a clear leader in the dressing room.
Writer’s View
As a Carlisle fan, this is a move I don’t want to see happen, but it is easy to see why Feeney deserves a summer move. That being said with the Cumbrians being promoted this season, Feeney’s chances of staying at Brunton Park will have no doubt increased. It is expected that the club will announce the acceptance or decline of the new contracts that were offered to Feeney and three others in the next couple of days. When these are announced, we’ll have a far better understanding of his whereabouts next season.
