Peterborough United confirmed this afternoon that they have handed Darren Ferguson a new three-year deal following his short spell with the club last season that saw them finish in the playoffs, as per the club’s official website.
Ferguson returned to Peterborough United in January following the dismissal of Grant McCann. In his short time back with the club, Ferguson had a win percentage of 58% and steered the team to the playoffs on the final day before dramatically losing out to Sheffield Wednesday over two legs.
Who Is Darren Ferguson?
In each of Ferguson’s previous three spells with Peterborough United, he earned League One promotions as well as promotion from League Two in 2008.
Ferguson, who is the son of the legendary Sir Alex Ferguson, is a well-respected figure at Peterborough having spent the majority of his managerial career with The Posh.
McCann, who replaced Ferguson in 2022, was unable to save Peterborough from Championship relegation but the club kept faith in him to help gain promotion straight back up after falling to the third tier. Unfortunately for Posh, McCann was unable to do that and was relieved of his duties after one win in nine. He was then replaced by Ferguson on an interim basis.
However, after Ferguson’s impressive performances once again at Peterborough to steer them to the third tier playoffs after dismal displays prior, he has been handed a three-year deal to stay on.
What Was Said?
When speaking to the club’s official website, Ferguson said: “I had a long chat with the chairman and we spoke about the direction that I felt the club needed to go in and that was to go younger, develop players and I felt that there were a lot of players that have been here a long time and we needed to freshen the squad up and fortunately he agreed. We are very much aligned on that.
Club Chairman, Darragh MacAnthony was pleased that they could agree on the terms for Ferguson’s full time return and said: “The owners of the football club are absolutely thrilled that the greatest manager of Posh in modern times is part of an exciting new chapter that starts this summer. We are all looking forward to shaping the squad for the new campaign.”
