Peterborough Chairman Makes Bold Statement Following Play-Off Defeat

Peterborough United chairman, Darragh MacAnthony made a bold statement following the team’s playoff semi-final defeat stating that they will be able to challenge at the top of League One next season in a video on his Twitter page.

Peterborough lost out to Sheffield Wednesday last week despite holding a 4-0 lead in the first leg, in a game that saw one of the most impressive comebacks with Wednesday overturning the four-goal deficit to win on penalties, with the score at 5-1 after extra time. MacAnthony, who became chairman in 2006, thinks that his Peterborough side will be a force to be reckoned with in the 23/24 League One campaign.

What Was Said?

MacAnthony took to Twitter with a video that told the fans what his plans were moving into next season as the club looks to bounce back after their playoff defeat and go for promotion next season.

“I’m going to be speaking to the staff, the current manager and I’m really looking forward to next season now. I’m focused, driven and fuelled by everything that has happened this season like never before.

“I’m looking forward to what our young, dynamic football club does. We’re going to be young and quick.

“People are saying we’re going to be young because it’s cheap. No, it has nothing to do with money.

“I love owning this football club and I’ve never been as fuelled as I am right now, you are not getting rid of me anytime soon and I will fix a lot of things on and off the field.

“I’ll put us in a place where our fans are proud of us. We are going to change a lot of things, but we are going to change in a positive way and good decisions will be made. We are going to be exciting again!”

What Does It Mean?

This seems like a statement of intent from MacAnthony, and he obviously wants to right the wrongs from last season. He mentioned that they will be “young and quick” which shows they plan to recruit talented young players to help them in their pursuit of promotion to the Championship.

He also mentioned “change” a few times throughout, which again points to a potential change in direction at The Weston Holmes Stadium.

Although MacAnthony splits opinion in the Peterborough fanbase, it is clear he acts with the best intentions of the club at heart. If all goes well in the summer, next season could be great for Peterborough and they really could be a force to be reckoned with.

They already have a talented squad with a core of players capable of playing at the top end of League One, with a few additions they could easily be early favourites for promotion.
