Wrexham AFC star, Ben Tozer claims that while expectations remain high at The Racecourse, there will be less pressure on the team now they are back in the Football League.
Tozer believes that there will be less pressure on Wrexham next season after they won the National League ahead of Notts County with 111 points. The veteran defender claims that the National League is a tougher division, with only one automatic promotion spot and believes that the team can challenge in League Two, with three automatic promotion places available.
Who is Ben Tozer?
Ben Tozer signed for Wrexham in 2021, as Hollywood owners Ryan Reynolds and Rob McElhenney looked to add EFL talent to their squad, so they could earn promotion back to the football league. It took longer than expected though, with Tozer spending two seasons at National League level, but they achieved promotion last season ahead of Notts County, with Tozer being one of two Wrexham players to feature in every league game.
Tozer, who is well known for his lethal long throw, will be back in the football league next season after a two year absence following his departure from Cheltenham Town, and the defender will be hoping he can continue his impressive form from the last campaign into the next at a higher level. Tozer featured in the National League team of the season, scoring four goals and keeping 17 cleansheets in 46 games.
What Was Said?
Tozer believes that with three automatic promotion spots, it will take the pressure off himself and his Wrexham teammates, as they look for back-to-back promotions to League One next season.
“The National League is tougher than League Two for many reasons and I don’t see why we can’t challenge,” said centre-back Tozer, who saw Wrexham finish runners-up to champions Stockport County in 2021-22 before losing to Grimsby Town in the play-off semi-final.
“Look at Stockport this season, they were up there in League Two. Three teams going up automatically takes a bit of pressure off in a way because there is more chance of going up.
“We will enjoy this moment right now but as soon as it comes to it, it is full focus on that.”

Wrexham will be aiming to challenge for promotion in League Two, and Tozer makes a good point about the pressure being less with more opportunities for promotion available. If Wrexham can continue their form, and make a few good additions to their already star studded squad, they will be a force to reckon with next season.
