Portsmouth winger Micheal Jacobs has multiple League One teams fighting over his services, according to reports from The News.
The 31-year-old has been a regular contributor under manager John Mousinho since his arrival in January, however, is set to leave Fratton Park this summer with his contract expiring and has Burton Albion and newly promoted Northampton Town attempting to secure his signature.
Who Is Micheal Jacobs?
Starting his career at boyhood club Northampton, Jacobs made his debut for the Cobblers at 18 in a 2-1 win against Bournemouth. It wouldn’t take long for the winger to contribute with back-to-back seasons of double-digit assists in his first two full seasons.
After tearing up League Two at just 20 years of age, Jacobs got his move to Championship side Derby and instantly contributed with nine-goal contributions in his first year with the club. However, following a lacklustre season in the second tier of English football, the soon-to-be free agent spent time at Wolverhampton Wanderers and Wigan Atheltic in League One before his move to Pompey.
No More Pompey?
Spending the last three seasons with Portsmouth, Jacobs has been a consistent performer, however, has been hampered by injuries at times. Struggling to regularly get time in the starting 11 under the previous manager Danny Cowley, the winger featured 20 since Mousinho’s arrival, leading to the club being open to keeping him.
Staying in League One?
Failing to come to terms on a new deal, Jacobs is set to leave Portsmouth after three years with the club and has two League One rivals interested in him. Both Burton and Northampton will be fighting it out in the same division next season and could have a new left-winger to help with the goals.
Writer’s View
The fit with Northampton makes a look of sense for Jacobs, with him getting to return to home in a division he knows better than most. Making 185 appearances in League One, the former Wigan man has an impressive 76 goal contributions in the league and should offer to be an experienced and reliable option on the wing.
