Championship club Swansea City’s retained list has been officially unvieled on the club’s website eith 19 year old Corey Hurford announced as leaving the club this summer. Now the player is a free agent, and able to join up with another club without the need for a transfer fee, we take a look at five potential destinations for the 19-year-old.
Who is he?
Corey Hurford plays predominantly as a right wing back who has featured for Swansea City at their u18 and u21 levels. He signed for Swansea in January 2022 when he was just17, joining from Briton Ferry. During his time with Ferry he played as an attacking midfielder, yet during his time with the Swans, he has taken a more creative right wing back role. Before his move to Briton Ferry was at Chippenham Town.
5 Potential Destinations
Newport County:
We have seen throughout the past few years a few players make the transition from Swansea City to Newport. This move could definitely be beneficial to both player and club as Hurford plays a similar position to that of senior Newport player Cameron Norman, who could be departing the club on a free in the summer. So this could be a potential replacement, with the likely lower wage demand too, it could be an ideal financial move for Newport too.
Lincoln City:
Lincoln City are in the market for a RWB so this could be a move that would entice Hurford to make the move. With the main option in recent weeks being 23 year old Lasse Sorensen (whos regular position is centre midfield) not only will it be the choice of rotation for Lincoln but could allow Lasse to play in his preferred position on occasion. But it will also be the first time in a while that Lincoln have had a dedicated right wing back in their team (with Regan Poole (CB) and Teddy Bishop (CM) having had to play there within recent times) the links to Swansea City regarding business in the past could also be a good shout
Peterborough United:
Following the loss in the playoff semi-final against Sheffield Wednesday the Posh are planning agains for another season in League One. One position that could be a priority for Peterborough could be the right wing back role. With Joe Ward out of contract and after the performance at Hillsborough, it looks like his time at the Posh could be well and truly over. They could replace him with a young vibrant wing back which very much fits the Posh model.
Oxford United:
Oxford also work closely with Swansea City, so the club could well be aware of the youngster already. 28 year old Djavan Anderson is leaving the club following the expiration of his deal in June and the Welsh wing-back would well be an option for a replacement as well as definite contender for the starting role.
Shrewsbury:
A lot is uncertain behind the scenes of Shrewsbury, they may well be looking for a new potential wing-back, with Elliott Bennett departing the club after the season has concluded. Corey Hurford could be a great addition to them with his tricky dribbling and decent ability to read the game with the ability to get better. He could be a stroke of genius to join them and help out their creativity and overall work ethic, something that Salop have struggled with at many points in what has been a bumpy campaign.
Writer’s View
Many of these clubs could be a good fit for Corey Hurford for next season, he nearly broke into Swansea’s first team at points so there is clear potential there. For me, I would say Newport could be his best destination, due to him being so young, he will have plenty of time to develop under manager Graham Coughlan and potentially then give himself the chance to get more higher league experience. The location from Swansea to Newport is also only around 82km/51 miles, which could mean a relatively easy move for him to make.
