Ben Foster remains in conversation with National League Champions Wrexham AFC over his future with the club confirming the news in their official retained list ahead of the 23/24 season.
Foster signed for Wrexham in March 2023 to aid the Red Dragons’ push towards the Football League as they suffered a goalkeeping crisis. The club achieved their goal of promotion with the help of the former Manchester United whilst also picking up the National League title.
The 40-year-old has made eight appearances this season (his second spell with the club) and was vital in helping them in their final push towards promotion fending off the impressive Notts County who secured their promotion through the play offs. The short term deal included several highlights such as his last-minute penalty save against the title challengers to clinch a vital 3 points.
Foster and owner Ryan Reynolds were caught joking regarding the players future after the title was confirmed which lead some to speculate that a new deal could be on the cards. The goalkeeper was far less committal when interviewed later in the day.
What did the statement say?
“A discussion will take place with Ben Foster to establish if his intention is to return to retirement or continue playing”
Foster’s intentions are still to be confirmed, now at 40 years old, he has of course already retired from professional football once. Before rejoining Wrexham he turned down the opportunity to play Premier League football again with Newcastle United opting to retire,
Writer’s View
It was amazing to see Foster back between the sticks towards the end of this season, however, it’s hard to tell if he will be staying on another year.
From the outside looking in, he is adored by the Wrexham faithful and looks like he has loved every minute of being back out on the pitch.
I certainly look forward to the chance of possibly watching Foster, when the Gills face Wrexham next season but whatever happens, his stint with Wrexham has been memorable.
