Portsmouth defender Clark Robertson is set to leave the club this summer, following the expiry of his contract, according to The News Portsmouth.Â
Pompey’s skipper is one of 13 out-of-contract players who could be on the move this transfer window, with several League One teams, including Derby County, interested in him for next season.
Who Is Clark Robertson?
The 29-year-old arrived at Fratton Park two years ago after leaving Championship side Rotherham in the hope of more game time. Robertson quickly became a leading figure amongst the dressing room, earning the captain’s armband during his two-year spell with the club.
Signing under previous manager Danny Cowley, the former Blackpool man struggled with injuries during his time at the club and never got to consistently show his ability under new boss John Mousinho.
What Went Wrong At Portsmouth?
As mentioned, Robertson was hampered by injuries during his spell with the South Coast club, restricting him to 40 league starts over two seasons. Alongside the fact new management came into the club while he was sidelined, the Scotsman struggled to get time on the pitch to prove his worth.
Can He Overcome The Injuries?
Robertson isn’t set to be short of options following his departure from Pompey, with a host of League One clubs set to be interested in his services. While the talent of the player is in no question, how worried should teams be about the constant injuries?
Injuries in sports can be a very unpredictable circumstance, however, the defender has a worrying history with them. Robertson has failed to play in over 30 league games for the last five seasons, so it’s something to keep on an eye on for teams interested.
Writer’s View
There’s no doubt Robertson on his day can lead a club at the top of League One, however, we have failed to see him consistently on his day for some time. Unfortunately, a lack of time on the pitch has hampered him during his time with both Rotherham and Portsmouth, but the skipper will get to choose his next destination.
Maybe remaining in League One will be an option for him, or a return to the Scottish Premiership could be a breath of fresh air.
