After a gruelling National League season which has seen ‘The Biggest Game in Non-League’ played at the top and three teams already relegated at the bottom, the next thing to do is crown our champion between Wrexham or Notts County.
As you all might be familiar with, Hollywood-owned Wrexham hosted the Magpies in a thriller to determine which 100-point club would sit atop of the league, and the Red Dragons came out on top.
However, with the gap between the two sides being as close as it is and Wrexham stumbling on the weekend to Barnet, the job is not done for them to gain promotion to League Two just yet.
With two more Saturdays of National League football to play, the Welsh club are in a position to lift the title on either of the weekend, but when are they most likely to do so?
The answer in itself is short, however, let’s lay out a picture and look at what we have to come.
Currently breaking records at the top of the league, Wrexham’s 107 points so far on the year is the single-season points record in the National League and professional English Football. Their spectacular 33 league wins have catapulted them four points clear of their challengers Notts County, meaning one more win will be enough to secure the title.
Next, let’s look at their forthcoming opponents.
Notts County’s remaining opponents are both towards the back end of the league, with a clash to bottom-of-the-table Maidstone United followed by relegation fighters York City. Both games should be winnable for Notts and if they still want to secure automatic promotion, there have to walk away with the six points.
As the title is in Wrexham’s hands, their games have a lot more riding on it. An evening match on Saturday will be the Red’s first crack at lifting the trophy, when they take on potential upsetters Boreham Wood.
Sat 6th in the league, Boreham Wood will be no walkover for Wrexham with the best defensive record in the league. Wood’s have been rock solid at the back, conceding just 35 goals throughout the season while also losing the third least games in the league – behind only the top two teams themselves.
If the battle then makes it to the last game of the season, a matchup against an in-form Torquay side still attempting to survive relegation will be in play. The Gulls may be in the drop zone, however, with five wins in their last six games they are doing everything they can to stay up.
So with that all said, when do I think the title will be won?
Not getting a win in their last two games would be extremely shocking to see from Wrexham, and it’s why I do think they end the season on top.
It then just comes down to what weekend they win it on. While I like the Boreham Wood matchup with their strong defence, Wrexham’s home record is hard to ignore.
Over the last month, we have seen the Reds slip up to Barnet, Halifax and even Maidenhead, however they have all come away from home. When they’ve looked their best it’s been while at the Racecourse Ground.
For that reason alone, I see the Red Dragons winning the league this Saturday and putting a perfect end to their first Hollywood movie.
