Mansfield Town have parted company with manager John Dempster and speculation is rife Bristol Rovers boss Graham Coughlan is set to take over at Field Mill.
The Stags announced the news they had sacked Dempster last night as news broke that Graham Coughlan was assessing his options at the Gas in the wake of an impressive 2-1 win at Ipswich.
The win moved Rovers to fourth in League One, but Coughlan cited personal issues amongst the reasons he’s unhappy in the South West. Coughlan’s home and family are still in the north of England, and it’s believed he’s been struggling to juggle working at Gas and commuting back to see his wife and children in Sheffield.
Coughlan was also critical of a lack of investment at the club, which left him feeling he had taken the club as far as he could under the current owners.
Meanwhile, at Field Mill, Dempster ultimately paid the price for a disappointing season that sees the Stags at the bottom end of the League Two table after yesterdays 1-1 draw with high-flying Crewe.
At the time of writing, the latest reports suggest Rovers have rejected an approach from Mansfield for their talented boss.
Coughlan initially struggled to win over may supporters who still pined for their old boss Darrell Clarke, but recent results have seen his popularity rocket. Many Gas fans were not happy with the speculation when they took to social media to react to the official statement by Mansfield while Stags fans were delighted to see the back of Dempster, although some did express sympathy for a man who has been a loyal servant of the club for many years.
Plenty of Mansfield fans would love to see a return for David Flitcroft, who took them to the playoffs last season while Rovers fans were quick to let them know that in Coughlan, they would be getting a very talented boss.
