It was perhaps as predictable as any of the results this weekend, Sunderland losing at Gillingham.
What was not predictable was the horror-show which the Sunderland players turned in. Gillingham dominated the game from start to finish and their 89th-minute winner was no less then they deserved.
Sunderland were without direction, looking aimless at times and disjointed at others. Charlie Wyke had a goal ruled out despite no flag from the linesman, but it would have been more than the visitors deserved had it been allowed. Words like woeful, abject and abysmal come to mind when watching Phil Parkinson’s side trying to get forward yesterday.
The defeat means they’ve now failed to win in seven matches. They’ve lost two on the spin, which is the sum total of defeat Jack Ross had suffered before he was dismissed. Losing 2-0 at Lincoln City seemed like a low point for the Black Cats, but Parkinson’s reign has delivered more every week.
They’ve won just two of the 12 matches Phil Parkinson has overseen, beating a terrible Tranmere side 5-0 and whipping boys Southend 1-0. They have suffered defeat against Gillingham, Burton, Scunthorpe, Leicester Under 21s, Wycombe and Shrewsbury. Jack Ross lost ten fixtures during his tenure as manager, Parkinson has been beaten six times in less than two months.
He looked a beaten man as he faced the press after the game and if the pressure is getting to him, it is best he stays away from social media. Fans are not happy, but then they weren’t happy with a man who lost two matches at the start of the season and took them to Wembley twice, were they? Here’s what they’re saying.
