Lawrence Shankland is a goal machine north of the border and over the summer, he was linked with a move to Sunderland.
He left Ayr United with 34 goals in 41 games, 62 in 73 across two seasons. Instead of the big move south of the border, he joined 1987 UEFA Cup runners up Dundee United where he’s currently scored 19 goals in 18 matches.
That’s led to a call up to the Scotland squad where he’s already bagged for them too. Despite this form, it’s been revealed Jack Ross did not want to sign him over the summer.
That’s the view of Charlie Methven, as expressed at a question and answer session with supporters last night. It was intimated that the goal machine could have moved to the Black Cats, but Ross said no.
Jack Ross has since been relieved of his duties, joining up with Edinburgh side Hibernian instead. Sunderland went on to sign Marc McNulty who, ironically, spent last season at Hibernian.
Despite the immense goal return shown by Shankland, some fans haven’t been too critical of the decision not to sign him. Others, as you’d expect, have.
