‘Stendel?’ ‘Announce Allardyce’ – These Sunderland fans react to Ross sacking by speculating on his possible successor

Sunderland have sacked manager Jack Ross in the wake of the Black Cats disappointing away defeat to Lincoln City on Saturday.

It was only Sunderland’s second league defeat of the season, but pressure has been mounting on Ross with the side sixth in the table, deemed unacceptable by many Sunderland fans considering the resources and budget at his disposal.

Some travelling fans booed the team off the pitch at the end of the 2-0 loss at Lincoln, a result which left them eight points of leaders Ipswich Town.

Ross took over at the Stadium of Light in May 2018 and led them to the League One play-offs last season, but the loss to Charlton at Wembley condemned the club to another season in League One and ensured Ross would be under pressure if he didn’t start this campaign exceptionally well.

Many fans have been calling for him to go for some time and soon took to social media to react to the news. It is fair to say plenty of fans will not be losing any sleep over his departure with some already speculating on who could be his possible successor.

Daniel Stendel has recently left Barnsley following his struggles in the Championship after beating Sunderland to a League One automatic promotion place last time out, and many fans are vigorously touting the German. Some fans feel former manager Sam Allardyce is the man for the job while a few Newcastle fans joined in the fun by asking them to take Steve Bruce back. Another former manager Roy Keane is also a favourite of some fans.

Here is a selection of responses to the news from Sunderland fans wondering who will be the next man in the Stadium of Light hot seat.
