Oxford United have begun their summer recruitment in earnest by capturing released Wolves youngster Kevin Berkoe on a one-year deal.
The left back began his career with Chelsea and told oufc.co.uk that he was delighted to have signed for Karl Robinson’s side.
“I was with Chelsea from the age of nine and then did my scholarship at Wolves. I played against Oxford in the under 23 cup last season and they were very impressive so now I want to try and force my way into the first team here because it’s a club that gives youngsters that opportunity.”
Karl Robinson was equally excited at bagging the 17-year-old, pointing to his classy upbringing as a reason for bringing the talented youth to the Kassam Stadium.
“It’s an exciting signing for us. Look at his pedigree and you can see he has a lot of ability and now he has to chance to push on and force his way in to the first team here. He is quick, technically very good and I know there were a number of clubs looking at him so we are really happy that he sees his future at Oxford.”
It represents a sharp change in approach by Robinson, who appeared very cautious and non-committal during his first pre-season with the club. That didn’t pan out well, they suffered a series of struggles early doors and this time he’s going to be bringing players in much earlier.
Fans were delighted to see a signing this early in the summer and pointed out on Twitter that it’s a fresh approach which they’re hoping will pay dividends.
early signings!!! funny how karl is now saying what fans said about getting business done early last summer. ?
