‘Been coming for a while’ – Barnsley fans react to disappointing defeat at Burton

Barnsley’s twenty-game unbeaten league run came to an abrupt end at Burton Albion on Saturday as the Brewers ran out 3-1 winners.

in-form Burton notched up their third consecutive win and blew the race for League One automatic promotion wide open with both Sunderland and Portsmouth winning and closing the gap on the Tykes.

A thrilling game saw the Brewers take an early lead through Jamie Allen and then double their advantage through Liam Boyce on eighty-one minutes. A Cauley Woodrow penalty halved the deficit for the Tykes with five minutes left to play, but Marcus Harness secured the points for Burton with a minute of normal time remaining when Boyce found him unmarked in the centre.

The defeat left the Tykes level on points with Sunderland, who have two games in hand, and only two points ahead of Portsmouth who occupy fourth place.

The disappointing performance in which their usual defensive solidity was lacking and the attack looked toothless, led to many fans taking to Twitter.

Most felt the defeat had been coming. Barnsley had drawn three of their previous four games, with many fearing automatic promotion, and an immediate return to the Championship was slipping from their grasp.

Here is a small selection of their responses to the result.
