Fans react after former Grimsby Town captain John Welsh convicted of assault

Former Grimsby Town captain John Welsh has been convicted of assault after an incident at a Liverpool city centre bus stop in March last year.

The former Liverpool trainee pleaded guilty to one count of assault occasioning grievous bodily harm after fracturing a woman’s leg following a night out with his brothers.

The 35-year-old asked his victim “do you know who I am?” as he attacked his victim, a court heard.

Welsh, who had drunk eleven pints of shandy before the attack, was handed a fifteen-month custodial sentence, suspended for two years, ordered to wear an electronic tag for three months and carry out two hundred hours of unpaid work, and provide £2,000 in compensation at Liverpool Crown Court yesterday.

Fans from Grimsby and a number of the midfielders previous clubs, which include Preston, Hull and Tranmere soon took to Twitter to react to the news with many surprised given the players previous good public image.

Mariners fans also questioned whether the incident had anything to do with Welsh being released from his contract last week after signing a two-year deal in June 2018.

Here is a selection of their responses.
