Less than seven months into his job as Head Coach of Cambridge United, Joe Dunne has been relieved of his duties.
The former Colchester boss has endured a tough time this season with injuries, but the board have decided in the wake of recent results it was time to get rid.
The U’s are 21st in the table, just one win above the drop zone and were recently dumped out of the FA Cup by Guiseley, going 4-0 down before fighting back to 4-3.
They have lost three of their last nine matches, winning three in a row at the end of October, but the board have still decided enough is enough.
It isn’t a move the appears to be universally popular with the U’s fans. They’re suspicious of the backing Dunne had, pointing to the need for a complete clear out once former boss Shaun Derry left. Instead, Dunne made do with a vast amount of the squad, adding only a few faces in the summer.
They’re now on the search for yet another manager after 12 damaging months both for the club, and for Dunne himself.
He’s a selection of responses the Cambridge fans have been giving on Twitter this morning.
Damn we missed out on Sol Campbell…..there is a god!!! #CamUtd

So the circus continues at #CamUtd they wanted Derry out✔️ they wanted Dunne in✔️ and then out✔️. They are never happy, perhaps staying managerless would be a good thing then a random supporter could be picked each week to manage the team. F***ing laughable.

Waking up to see that the gaffer is gone has shocked me. I do feel sorry for Joe, I really do as it’s just fallen apart for him. When I met him after Port Vale and before Braintree, he was calm and he knew what he wanted, he’s been unlucky. Thank you #CamUtd pic.twitter.com/JMIhn4W68O

Sad to see Joe Dunne go, but defensively we have been shocking all season, and lacking in organisation. A change was needed. We need to get this right, we can't afford Steve Thompson mkII #camUTD

I don't want to blame the players, but I do. #camUTD #yaba https://t.co/AvaHCBnJRt

Dunne should never have been appointed in the first place, a terrible decision by the board to make him caretaker then to let him continue to the point where there was no choice but to give him the job. Should have been a complete clear-cut after the Derry disaster #CamUTD
