Failure to beat National League leaders Salford City this weekend has cost John Askey his job, an ironic twist considering it was winning the same division that earned him it in the first place.
The former Macclesfield man has been dismissed just five months into his tenure, opening up the possibility for a sensational return for former manager Paul Hurst. He left Salop in May after taking them to the Checkatrade Trophy final, as well as a play off final, both of which they lost.
He went to Ipswich in the summer but has already been fired himself, paving the way for a return. Many of the fans on social media are keen for him to come back, but surprisingly he isn’t the bookies choice.
They think former Blackpool manager Gary Bowyer could be in the frame, himself second favourite for the recently available Swindon Town job.
Askey’s dismissal has come as a surprise to the football world, coming from a club who usually show faith and patience with a manager, but clearly their experience has not worked. The fans seem to be behind the decision too, although not all of them want to go back to the man who led them to Wembley failure last season.
