Burnley Turn Attention Towards Manager With 59% Win Ratio

Burnley are set to change their tack in pursuit of a successor for Vincent Kompany, having identified a manager who has recently been eliminated from EURO 2024, according to reports.

The Clarets have been without a head coach for over a month now, a timeframe which has coincided with the summer transfer window opening. Ruud van Nistelrooy had seemingly become the favourite to take over at Turf Moor, twelve months after he stood down from his position at PSV Eindhoven after winning two trophies.

It was revealed almost two weeks ago that Burnley were in advanced talks with the former Manchester United centre-forward and that the unemployed boss was close to agreeing a multi-year contract to become the club’s new manager. Meanwhile, BBC Sport concurred that the board had spoken to van Nistelrooy as well as former Derby County head coach Frank Lampard and ex-Bournemouth boss Scott Parker.

Nevertheless, Fabrizio Romano reported last week that Man United had agreed deals to bring Go Ahead Eagles manager Rene Hake and van Nistelrooy to Old Trafford as part of a shake-up of Erik ten Hag’s coaching staff, forcing Burnley to look elsewhere for a new manager.

Now, Graeme Bailey in HITC has claimed that the hierarchy at Turf Moor are closing in on the appointment of Denmark boss Kasper Hjulmand after his side were dumped out of EURO 2024 on Saturday night following a 2-0 defeat to Germany which featured several contentious decisions from English referee Michael Oliver.

Furthermore, the outlet are reporting that Burnley have submitted an offer to the 52-year-old, who has a 59% win ratio in his current job after four years. The club are hoping he will accept their proposition over the coming days.

English fans will know Hjulmand very well after the two previous European Championships. Under his guidance, Denmark fought valiantly in 2021 against England in the semi-final of the competition, losing to Gareth Southgate’s side in extra-time after a contentious penalty decision, before earning a 1-1 draw in the group stage of the ongoing tournament, having played some excellent football on the day.

The experienced coach hasn’t managed at a club in over five years but still proved throughout his time with the national team that he is an astute tactician with an exciting brand of football. Perhaps Hjulmand will be the man to take Burnley back to the promised land.
