Carlisle United Promotion Winner Joins Exciting League One Side

Bristol Rovers have announced the signing of Joel Senior on a two-year deal following the expiration of his contract at Morecambe, according to the club’s official website.

A standout for the Shrimps last season, Senior turned down new terms at the club following the financial problems which currently surround them. As a result, he was able to walk on a free and it could indeed be a great piece of business by Bristol Rovers.

Senior would start 43 times for Morecambe last term in the fourth tier would provide one goal and four assists predominantly from the right-side of defence. Despite naturally being a right-back, the 25-year-old was also utilised down the left as well as in midfield, proving himself as a versatile asset in the process.

He’d be a great signing for the Shrimps despite only spending a year with the club having joined from Carlisle United the season prior. Senior was perhaps unlucky to not be rewarded with a new contract following the Cumbrians’ play-off final success in 2022/23 and he’d play a key part in Omari Patrick’s late equaliser against Stockport County.

Although unproven above League Two, its a rather exciting signing by Rovers, with Senior clearly a player on the way up. He joins the likes of Isaac Hutchinson, Clinton Mola, Ruel Sotiriou, Bryant Bilongo and Dan Ellison to join the club this summer and there’s plenty to like about the way the Gas have gone about their business so far.

Speaking to club media upon his arrival at the Memorial Stadium, Senior said:

“I’m delighted to sign with Bristol Rovers. When I first heard about the chance of coming to Rovers, I wanted to jump at the opportunity. This is a big club with a superb fanbase, and has everything a footballer would want.

“From the outside looking in, I could see how big of a club this is. Since I’ve come in and been around the training ground, you can see what a top facility this is and all the coaches and staff here are brilliant as well. As a footballer, you honestly can’t ask for anything more.

“I’ve been told about the club’s ambitions and how they align with the manager’s vision, and I can’t wait to help fulfill those targets. I’m glad to be here and I can’t wait to get going.”

Senior had quite frankly a superb season for Morecambe last term despite the Shrimps struggling on the whole and is deserving of a step-up to League One. He was incredibly unlucky to not be handed a new contract by Carlisle last summer, with the club believing that Fin Back and Jack Ellis would be the ones to go forward with, something which hasn’t exactly worked out too well given their relegation.

Although he probably won’t be an instant starter, Senior will be expected to fight for a place in the first team and can supply ample cover in multiple positions. There’s a lot to like about the Gas’ business so far this window and this further enhances their claims of progressing next season.
