Cheltenham Town Set To Lose First Team Player

Lincoln City are on the verge of signing Cheltenham Town striker Rob Street, according to Gloucestershire Live journalist Jon Palmer.

As reported by Palmer earlier this week, Lincoln are understood to have placed a ‘significant bid’ for the young attacker. This bid has now been accepted by the Robins.

An ex-Crystal Palace youth academy prospect, Street has had plenty of football league experience already at 22-years-old, with loan spells at both Newport County and Shrewsbury Town. He joined Cheltenham permanently last summer, moving on from the London-based outfit after five years. Despite a nasty knee injury ruling him out for a large portion of the campaign, Street played 26 games in his debut season, scoring four times in the process.

The Imps are now set to bring the forward to the LNER Stadium, with Michael Skubala’s side looking to bounce back from the disappointment of narrowingly missing out on the play-offs. The Lincolnshire-based club finished an agonising two points off sixth-placed Barnsley after losing against champions Portsmouth on the final day.

It is no secret that Skubala’s men lacked the cutting edge in front of goal at times last season, epecially before Christmas. January’s loan acquisition of Joe Taylor added much-needed firepower, whilst Freddie Draper returned from a temporary spell at Walsall to further bolster the attack.

The Robins faced relegation to the fourth tier last season after three consecutive seasons in League One. The club now look to be in a transitional period, losing ex-manager Darrell Clarke to Barnsley and replacing him with the experienced Michael Flynn.

Key players such as the likes of Liam Sercombe, Sean Long and Luke Southwood have left after rejecting new contracts. Others such as defender Lewis Freestone have departed the club to make the step back up to League One, with Street looking like the next player to continue this trend.

At the time of reporting it is not known what the bid from Lincoln is, but with the sizable £500,000 that Huddersfield paid for defender Lasse Sorensen, the Imps have some cash to splash as they set their sights on promotion.

Writer’s View

It should come as no surprise that Lincoln want to bolster their attacking ranks for next season. Whilst the addition of Rob Street may not replace Joe Taylor’s goals, he will certainly provide height, as well as a 100% work ethic to help the team.

From a Cheltenham perspective, losing another young, key player will again be another blow for Flynn. The Gloucestershire-based side have already had to deal with an array of exits so far and it looks to be a very important, busy summer on the transfer front for the club. However, five players have already arrived through the door in what will be a much-changed squad next season.
