Unlikely hero, or pantomime villain?

All I can say is he was a hero to me for saving us from another spell in the Conference after he took over from Steve Wicks and for bringing a new spirit to the club.

But on the other hand, I didn't have much direct experience of his last season with the club, only seeing two games.

Total charlatan.

I didn't see the Imps much during his tenure as a young family took precedence, but the matches I did see were embarassingly awful, the home games worse becuse of the deliberately potato-patch pitch.

The one exception was the spirited night at Maine Road.

I was horrified when he was appointed. One of my happiest days as an Imp when he was sacked.

Personally, I didn't like him. He was half a hero, half not. He started 'Team Lincoln', he put the wheels in motion for a mascot and he pushed for much more engagement off the field. The football was awful though and as a personality, he wasn't a good fit for us. When you look at the team, he did well with what he had, but it was a tough watch at times. Emley in the cup sticks in my mind, I left before the end for the first time ever, with us 2-1 down going into added time. We heard the roar down the Sincil Drain somewhere, and didn't even feel a huge amount of joy. Still, I celebrated the promotion like we'd won the league and I feel if we had kept Beck, we might have stayed up in '99. If and buts.

Here's a question for you - was he better or worse than Peter Jackson?

@therealefl Better than Jacko he blew the money on 7 has been's.

Away at Grimsby 1-1 Ellender has a free header puts it in the Keepers arms from a few yards out, keeper booys it upfront 2-1 then in the last 10 minutes total collapse 5-1 defeat.

From then on the writing was on the wall for him.

I hated John Beck.  He was the reason, for the only time in my life, I fell out of love with Lincoln City and stopped going.
