Millwall Defender Makes National League Switch

Millwall defender Kyle Smith has joined National League side Wealdstone on a short-term loan deal, ahead of Saturday’s home fixture against Altrincham, as confirmed via a statement on the Non-League side’s club website.

The full-back will link up with teammate Abdul Abdulmalik in the National League, following his arrival last week after the Stones have had a strong start to the 2023/24 campaign.

Who is Kyle Smith?

The youngster has been a regular figure of Millwall’s U21s side, especially last season when the club stormed to the Professional Development League Southern Division title in what was a thrilling campaign from the club.

Similarly, Smith is a versatile player with the ability to play as a right-back, left-back, wing-back or right-midfielder, which will add further attacking and defensive options to Stuart Maynard’s side.

A strong start to the season

Beginning with Millwall, Gary Rowett’s men are currently 12th in the Championship after their opening five matches. This includes wins against Stoke City and Middlesbrough but drew to Rowett’s former side Birmingham City in the match before the international break.

As for Wealdstone, they sit 11th after their first eight league games and head into Saturday’s match with two home wins from their last three home matches. The club have won three and drawn two of their matches so far this season and will be aiming to build on last weekend’s victory against Ebbsfleet United.

What’s been said?

The National League side finished their statement with the following paragraph…

We’re delighted to welcome another member of the EFL Championship side’s talented young squad to Grosvenor Vale. Kyle will wear the number 18 shirt and subject to all necessary approvals, goes straight into tomorrow’s squad to face Altrincham.’

Writer’s View

From a Wealdstone perspective, this is another brilliant signing from the National League side and gives them a further boost, ahead of their match against Altrincham who are riddled with injuries heading into the game.

As for Millwall, it appears as though they’ve found a possible affiliate club, which could allow them to utilise this with further loan spells throughout the 2023/24 campaign and beyond.
