Newcastle United midfielder Isaac Hayden is set to undergo a medical ahead of a loan move to Championship side Sheffield Wednesday, according to journalist Pete O’Rourke.
The 28-year-old had a failed move to Premier League rivals Luton Town earlier this week and is now destined to spend the 2023/24 campaign back in the second tier, following his spell last season.
Who is Isaac Hayden?
The Arsenal academy graduate has spent almost his entire career in the top levels of English football, leaving Arsenal for Newcastle in 2016. He’s spent seven years in the North East, making 171 appearances and contributing to 18 goals from defensive midfield.
Last season, Hayden was on loan at Norwich City in the Championship, making just 14 appearances in a spell affected by injuries, but is now set to return with Sheffield Wednesday.
A poor start
Sheffield Wednesday have failed to earn a point so far this season, losing all four of their opening matches. This began with a narrow 2-1 loss to Southampton on the opening day, with Wednesday unlucky not to come away with a point.
However, the club have since lost to Hull City, Preston North End and Cardiff City leaving them rock bottom of the Championship table. Similarly, they are the only side in the EFL that hasn’t earned a point so far this season.
What’s been said?
Journalist Pete O’Rourke confirmed that Hayden is currently undergoing a medical with the Championship side, ahead of a loan move to Hillsborough. It’s unclear as to whether this will be the club’s only signing of the day.
Writer’s View
Hayden has had plenty of impressive performances in the Premier League but has fallen on hard times over the last year or two. However, this is still a huge signing for Sheffield Wednesday to make.
The midfielder will drastically improve their quality in and around both boxes and will free up the likes of Barry Bannan to be more creative in their upcoming matches.
