Sunderland are plotting a late move to sign Crystal Palace winger Jesurun Rak-Sakyi on a season-long loan due to fears that Patrick Roberts will leave, according to journalist Alan Nixon.
The 20-year-old has been the subject of interest from the Championship all summer, following his impressive loan spell last season but despite Crystal Palace shutting the door, can Sunderland tempt them?
Who is Jesurun Rak-Sakyi?
The English winger joined Crystal Palace’s academy from Chelsea and has risen through the ranks and into the first-team picture in recent months. Last season, Rak-Sakyi was on loan at Charlton Athletic where he scored 15 goals and provided nine assists in 49 appearances for Dean Holden’s side.
So far this season, Rak-Sakyi has featured twice for Crystal Palace, including making his Premier League debut during a 1-0 defeat against runners-up Arsenal at Selhurst Park.
Improvement needed
Sunderland have taken just four points from their opening four games and Tony Mowbray will be frustrated that his side haven’t got more. The club suffered defeats to Ipswich and Preston before beating Rotherham and drawing to Coventry.
Roberts replacement
Sunderland winger Patrick Roberts has been on the receiving end of a bid from fellow Championship side Southampton and fears are growing that the Black Cats will lose their man, forcing them to search for a replacement.
Alan Nixon confirmed that Crystal Palace had ‘closed the door’ on any move for Rak-Sakyi to depart this summer, but could a desperate-looking Sunderland tempt the Premier League side to allow him to go out on loan?
Writer’s View
Rank-Sakyi would be a fantastic replacement for Patrick Roberts in my opinion, with the only downside being that it would be a loanee replacing a permanent player.
Both players have very similar styles of play and know where the back of the net is, which makes this a like-for-like replacement, but it ultimately depends on whether Crystal Palace allow him to go.
