Sunderland Man Set For Stoke City Switch

Sunderland midfielder Lynden Gooch is set to undergo a medical at Stoke City this evening, ahead of a switch to the Black Cats, according to Sky Sports journalist Lyall Thomas.

The 27-year-old was the subject of interest from fellow Championship sides but has chosen to move to the Midlands side, ahead of Friday’s deadline.

Who is Lynden Gooch?

The American winger joined Sunderland in 2012 as a young player, rising through the ranks and into the first-team fold. He’s made almost 250 appearances for the club, scoring 25 goals and assisting an additional 38.

Gooch has earned four caps for the USA and has featured twice this season, but only for a combined eight minutes, further implying that he’s set for an exit.

A mixture of starts

Sunderland have taken just four points from their opening four games and Tony Mowbray will be frustrated that his side haven’t got more. The club suffered defeats to Ipswich and Preston before beating Rotherham and drawing to Coventry.

Meanwhile, Stoke City have taken six points from their opening four league games so far as they sit tenth in the Championship standings. They began with a thumping 4-1 win against Rotherham, before falling to defeat against Ipswich. The Potters recovered to beat Watford but lost to Millwall at the weekend.

Writer’s View

Stoke City are set to land a very good and versatile midfielder, who will further strengthen their options for the remainder of the campaign.

Gooch will be a hard goodbye for many Sunderland fans but it is arguably the best thing for all parties involved in the deal.
