Cheltenham Town Battle League Two Duo For Championship Defender

Cheltenham Town are set to battle it out with MK Dons and Salford City in the race to sign Stoke City defender Matt Baker on a season-long loan deal, as confirmed by journalist Pete O’Rourke from Football Insider.

The Welshman is expected to sign a new contract with the Championship side, before heading out on loan for the 2023/24 campaign and clubs across the football league are reportedly queuing up to secure his signature.

Who is Matt Baker?

The 20-year-old was a product of the Gillingham academy, before signing for Championship side Stoke City in July 2021. The Welshman enjoyed a loan stint with League Two side Newport County during the second half of the previous season.

In Wales, Baker made 18 appearances for the club and earned two caps for the Welsh U21s side. However, what’s more, impressive was the fact that Baker successfully managed to display his versatility with Newport, having taken up an option in midfield throughout his stint in League Two.

Who’s in the race?

Beginning with the League One side, Cheltenham Town are on the search for a new centre-back, following the loan expiry of defender Caleb Taylor, who has since returned to West Bromwich Albion.

Meanwhile, both Salford City and MK Dons are expected to compete for promotion into League One next season and are keen to strengthen their squads as much as possible.

What’s been said?

According to journalist Pete O’Rourke, Stoke City are keen to send Baker as high as possible next season, with the hope of exposing him to a higher standard of football, in order to further develop the player.

Writer’s View

Personally, the fact that Stoke is looking to send him to a high division and Cheltenham needs a centre-back, looks almost set in stone in my honest opinion, but football is never as simple as that nowadays.

With Baker already featuring at a high level for Wales, he is evidently one for the future and would be a serious asset for any side looking to secure his services next season.
