Gateshead Land Play-Off Hero

Gateshead have completed the signing of Notts County play-off hero Archie Mair on a season-long loan deal, as confirmed via a statement on the club’s website.

The shot-stopper has signed from Championship side Norwich City after picking up a promotion medal in the National League last season with Luke Williams’ side.

Who is Archie Mair?

The 22-year-old was a youth prospect at SPFL side Aberdeen, before signing for Norwich City in July 2019. He also had loan spells with Kings Lynn and Lincoln City over the last couple of seasons, before joining Notts County on loan in January 2023.

At Meadow Lane, Mair made just four appearances for the club, but became a fans favourite during the play-off final. He came on for the penalty shoot-out and saved two penalties as Notts County beat Chesterfield in the final.

Promotion push?

Gateshead looked destined for relegation last season in the National League, before turning into the form side of the division with a strong turnaround. The club went from the bottom four to mid-table.

The club have already secured several impressive signings so far, including Maidstone’s Regan Booty, as preparations for the 2023/24 National League season begin.

What’s been said?

Upon signing for the club, he told the club’s website…

I want to be a number one, that’s the main thing about being here.

I want to play week in, week out, help lead the team and be that goalkeeper that they look back towards and have a bit of faith in.”

Writer’s View

Mair may have struggled for appearances at Notts County but he certainly made his impression felt and earned a deserving promotion medal.

He will head to Gateshead full of confidence with the goal of turning the club into dark horses in the National League next season and I back them to push for the play-offs.
