Former Charlton Athletic Defender Makes Permanent Move

Former Charlton Athletic defender Charlie Barker has completed a permanent move to National League side Wealdstone on a free transfer, as confirmed by a statement on the club’s website.

The 20-year-old is back for a third spell with the National League side, following two successive loan stints with the club and has continued to impress, leading the side to swoop in on a permanent basis.

Who is Charlie Barker?

The versatile defender was a product of the Charlton Athletic Academy and has enjoyed several Non-League stints throughout his career so far.

Two of these were with Wealdstone, helping the club to confirm their safety in the National League, the highest position the club has ever been in. He’s made 32 first-team appearances for the club and will be aiming to kick on next season.

From EFL to the National League

Charlie Barker played a vital role in helping Wealdstone to confirm their place in the National League for another season. The club finished 13th last season, just three points off a top-ten finish in the fifth tier.

Meanwhile, Charlton Athletic finished the League One season in 10th place, following a strong end to a frustrating season for Dean Holden’s side.

What’s been said?

The club released a short statement on their website, stating…

The club are delighted with the news regarding Charlie’s one-year permanent deal with an option to extend, and we can’t wait to see him back at The Vale! He will wear the number 3 strip for the 2023/24 season.’

Writer’s View

Barker had a promising time with Charlton’s youth sides but struggled to make that jump into the first-team picture. However, he has cruised with success at Wealdstone in both loan spells with the club.

Therefore, news of his permanent arrival will come as a huge boost to the National League side, ahead of the 2023/24 season and they’ll be pushing to kick on again next season.
