Swansea City winger Morgan Whittaker has been tipped to replace Swedish international Viktor Gyokeres at Championship side Coventry City, according to journalist Darren Witcoop.
The 22-year-old is reportedly a target for the Skyblues, as they remain keen to improve their attacking options, following the departures of several players, following the conclusion of the 2022/23 Championship season.
Who is Morgan Whittaker?
The forward is a product of the Derby County academy, breaking through into the first-team side. In February 2021, Whittaker signed for Swansea City following Derby’s financial issues. He’s since had impressive loan spells with both Lincoln City and Plymouth Argyle.
Last season, Whittaker made 46 appearances in all competitions for both Swansea and Plymouth. In that time he contributed to 17 goals, with 16 of them coming for the League One champions.
What type of player is he?
Whittaker is a quick, young forward player who has spent his entire career in either League One or the Championship. He cost Swansea £1 million but has since had two successful loan spells.
He can operate as either a striker, winger or centre-forward, further showcasing his versatile capabilities, which would be appealing to a side looking to land his signature this summer.
What’s been said?
According to Darren Witcoop, Coventry City has reportedly identified Whittaker as a possible Gyokeres replacement. In a tweet, he stated…
‘Coventry will target Swansea striker Morgan Whittaker to replace Victor Gykores with the in-demand Swede set to leave this summer. Glasgow Rangers and Plymouth remain big fans of Whittaker but Coventry now have their eye on the frontman’
Writer’s View
Whittaker is a player who has a lot of potential at a top level, but goalscoring has proven a challenge in the Championship. As a Coventry fan, I also don’t believe he would be a Gyokeres replacement, instead I’d believe him to be a Tyler Walker replacement instead.
However, he has enough experience and fits the club’s current business model, which makes me believe that he would be a name on the club’s shortlist this summer.
